FAQ

Welcome to Float North County, where you can enjoy the calming effects of floating in our state of the art float tanks, AKA sensory deprivation tanks. Our facility was designed to offer relaxation, therapeutic relief, and peaceful solitude. Below, you will find answers to common questions we get about floating.

  • When should I come?

Please come 10 to 15 minutes before your planned flotation session. This gives you enough time to check in and prepare without hurrying, giving a relaxing start to your visit.

  • Is there anything I should bring?

You do not need to bring anything. We provide all essential goods, including towels, washcloths, and hair care products. Our preparation area has a blow dryer, hair straightener, combs, and cosmetics facilities.

  • What if I am claustrophobic?

Floating at our facilities is meant to be comfortable for you. Our four huge float tanks are roomy, giving the impression of floating in wide space rather than confinement. This atmosphere helps ease the phobias of small spaces, making it appropriate for persons who suffer from claustrophobia.

  • What methods are used to clean the float tanks?

The highly sterile salt water is fully filtered through a sophisticated filtration system three times between each float and sanitized with a UV system along with ozone and Hydrogen Peroxide.

  • Is it possible to drown if I fall asleep?

It is quite safe to fall asleep in the float tank. The buoyancy of the seawater is enough to keep you floating with ease. The worst thing that may happen is you get a spray of salt water in your eyes.

  • Is it possible to float when menstruating?

We request that you take the same hygienic measures when you are swimming. We also provide feminine hygiene items as required.

  • Can I float if I am pregnant?

Absolutely! Floating is safe until the third trimester and may be a good technique to alleviate the physical strains of pregnancy. If you have any pregnancy-related concerns, please check with your doctor before your session.

  • Can I float if I have freshly colored my hair?

Please wait at least three days after dying your hair before floating. Carefully wash your hair before your session to avoid color from compromising the water quality.

  • Do doctors or physical therapists utilize or encourage flotation?

Yes, flotation treatment is backed by over 40 years of study and is endorsed by a wide range of healthcare specialists. It is well-known for its ability to reduce stress, anxiety, and high blood pressure, as well as help treat illnesses such as fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and PTSD.

  • Can I stay afloat for more than 90 minutes?

Certainly! You may arrange successive sessions lasting up to 3 hours. Some customers choose longer sessions of up to 8 hours for profound relaxation.

  • Is there a minimum age restriction for flotation?

You must be at least 10 years old to use our float tanks. Children under 13 must have a parent or guardian present during the session.

  • How long have you been in business?

Float North County first opened its doors March, 2015.

  • I just got a tattoo, should I float?

Floating and fresh tattoos do not mix! Not only could floating with a fresh tattoo be painful (salt + open wounds = ouch) but the epsom salt solution could cause fading or discoloration of your tattoo and permanently ruin its aesthetic appeal. How long you should wait before floating depends on the tattoo and how quickly it heals, but tattoo artists/floaters we have talked to have suggested waiting 4-6 weeks.

  • Can I float if I just got a piercing?

Like tattoos, this tends to not mix well! When your piercing is fresh it’s still an open wound, which can cause some major discomfort. Floating can take between a couple weeks to a couple months depending on what you had done. For more information we suggest searching the healing times online or ask your body modification artist.

  • What are the differences in your tanks?

Once you’re inside, the experience is practically identical in all four of our float rooms.  One difference is: Room 4’s float suite is wider than our other tanks. Learn more about our float rooms here.

  • Do I have to stay in the tank the entire time?

There aren’t any latches on the tank doors, and you can get out anytime.  That said, the 90-minutes usually goes by way faster than you’d expect (our average customer usually says it felt like 30-45 minutes long).

  • Do you do walk-ins?

We are often fully booked on the day itself, particularly during weekends. To secure a spot, we recommend booking in advance either by calling us or using our online booking portal. Please note that if you check availability but don't book immediately, we cannot guarantee a slot for a walk-in, as our schedule frequently changes.

  • Do I need a bathing suit?

Nope. You'll have your own private room and floating is most comfortable in the nude. However, if you really want to wear one, no one will ever know.

  • Do I get dehydrated from floating for so long?

Nope!  Your skin doesn’t even prune up, but it does become silky soft afterwards.

  • Are there any contradictions to floating?

While floating offers numerous benefits, there are certain conditions and situations where it may not be recommended:

Open Wounds or Skin Conditions: The high salt content in the water can cause discomfort and irritation

New Tattoos: We advise waiting until your tattoo has fully healed, which typically takes at least 4-6 weeks. This is to prevent irritation from the highly saline water and to protect the quality of your tattoo artwork.

Epilepsy or Seizure Disorders: Unless well-controlled and with the approval of a healthcare provider, due to the risk of seizures without immediate help.

Severe Heart Conditions: Individuals with unstable heart conditions should consult with their healthcare provider.

Kidney Disease:The absorption of magnesium from the Epsom salt may be an issue for individuals with kidney disease - consult with your doctor.

Severe Mental Health Conditions: Consult with a healthcare provider to discuss if floating is appropriate for you.

For any health concerns or conditions not listed, please consult with your healthcare provider before booking a float session. Otherwise, our team is ready to answer any questions to the best of our ability and help ensure your floating experience is safe and enjoyable.

  • I have an appointment scheduled, if I need to cancel/reschedule can I do that online?

Of course. Click here for step by step instructions on how to cancel or reschedule your appointment.

  • How often should I float?

It really depends on the person and individual goals/intentions, but the simple answer is: the more you float, the more benefits you'll feel.

The majority of our regular guests & members float between once/week and once/month for general stress/anxiety and wellness. Many people choose to float a lot in short bursts, due to a life event, injury, or creative project. Others, like those dealing with chronic pain or lifelong meditators, float nearly every day!

Ultimately, it's a personal choice. Our goal at Float North County is to help you discover how floating can uniquely improve your life.

*Our general recommendation is to commit to 3 float sessions in your first 3-4 weeks to get a true sense of what it's all about. You'll get over the novelty of the first experience, and start to develop some soft skills for getting the most out of your sessions.

Our memberships are designed to support this and help jumpstart a regular practice. We’ve found that those who float 3+ times in the first month tend to intuitively figure out how floating can benefit them, and from there, maintaining a 2-4+ float/month practice tends to yield the best results. As a member, if you complete 3 float sessions within a month even we’ll give you a 4th totally free.

  • What’s the longest someone has been in the tank?

We’ve had someone do an 8 hour float with us, and it’s possible to float even longer.

  • Do you offer couples floats?

Yes! If you’d like to schedule a couple’s float, our float suite in Room 4 can accommodate this.

  • Who invented the float tank?

    John C. Lilly.

  • How long have float tanks been around?

The first float tank was developed in 1954.  These involved full submersion in water and a breathing device that completely covered your face.  The first lay down commercial tanks were invented in the early 70’s.

  • What if I get bored?

There may be an adjustment period associated with the lack of sensory input and this is totally normal. Our minds are so used to the overload of the senses we experience on a daily basis, entering such a relaxed state may feel abnormal at first. Acknowledge your restlessness but let this moment quickly ease your mind and let your thoughts drift. Focus on your breathing and before you know it you’ll feel like a float pro.

  • What if I normally experience sea sickness or vertigo while in the water?

We'd hate to not have you give floating a try, but if these experiences are common for you, you might not feel comfortable in a float tank.

  • Are there any other rules I should be aware of?

Absolutely, and we appreciate you asking! For the benefit of all our guests, we have a few important rules outlined in our waivers:

Bodily Fluids: Please help maintain the cleanliness of our tanks. Refrain from floating if you have incontinence, and avoid introducing any bodily fluids (such as spitting, mucus, etc.) into the tanks. Non-compliance may result in a cleaning and salt replenishment fee of up to $1,000.

Intoxication: For your safety and the safety of others, you may not use our services if under the influence of drugs or alcohol, as your ability to safely navigate the tank is impaired and may increase the risk of adverse reactions.

Contagious Illnesses: If you're ill and potentially contagious, we kindly ask you to stay home. Notify us, and we will cancel or reschedule your float session without any fee. Your health and the health of others is our top priority.
